Hell has officially frozen over. Microsoft is bringing some of its developer tools to the Mac and Linux.
At the tech giant's Build 2015 conference on Wednesday, Scott Guthrie, Microsoft's executive vice-president of cloud and enterprise, introduced Visual Studio Code to the audience.
Visual Studio Code is a code-optimized editor with built-in support for dozens of different languages. It also has support for debugging, the version control tool Git and Microsoft Intellisense.In other words, its a solid code editor, along the lines of something like Sublime Text or TextMate 2.
The big news, though, is that it is cross-platform: Visual Studio Code will be available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Guthrie showed it running on both OS X and in Ubuntu.
As developer Grant Warren-Robertson (who is my husband and a reformed enterprise software developer) said to me, "When was the last time you saw Microsoft offer any dev tools on anything other than Win32?")
Visual Studio Code will be available for free, and can be downloaded later on Wednesday from VisualStudio.com.
